Mark Andreas, currently based in Stamford, Connecticut, has had a varied career as an artist, designer, carpenter, furniture maker, black smith, and ship builder. However, his passion always has been sculpture. Mark creates kinetic, abstract, and figurative sculpture. At its core, Mark’s art explores time, material, transformation, and social and environmental forces. Mark studied at the Art Institute of Boston and the School of Visual Arts in New York. The majority of Mark’s work is environmentally reactive sculpture. These sculptures move and act with forces of nature. They combine traditional hand-crafted woodworking and metal smithing methods with modern construction techniques. From an early age, Mark was an avid sailor and he began studying boat building and carpentry as early as age fourteen. His experiences as a sailor and boat builder have inspired his reactive sculptures and his desire to understand nature. For the past decade, Mark has been working as an artist, teacher, and curator. For the past decade, Mark has been working as an artist, teacher, and curator. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, including in Berlin, Helsinki, Istanbul, Basal, Turku, Miami, Chicago, Atlanta, and New York. Mark’s work has been on show at solo shows in Brooklyn, Berlin, Tennessee, and Basel. He also has participated in various group shows including at Galeria Anhava in Helsinki, One Art Space in Manhattan, Dam Stuhltragar Gallery in Brooklyn, and Silvermine Gallery in New Canaan, Connecticut. Mark has participated in visiting artist programs and lectured at Aalto University in Helsinki, University of Tennessee, and Yale University School of Art. Mark also has been selected to participate in many residencies, including the inaugural Artic Circle Sailing Residency in Longyearbyin, Norway; the Kone Foundation Residency in Finland; RSP Residency in Berlin, Germany; and E-Halle Gallery Residency in Basel, Switzerland. He has work in private collections nationally and internationally.
In 2011, Mark co-founded an international artist collective called Videokaffe, comprised of artists from Finland, the United States, Germany, and Russia. Since 2014, Mark has been teaching sculpture and furniture building at Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan, Connecticut.
